“I TRUSTED YOU!” Kara stormed into Dr. Jones’s office interrupting a session she was in the process of having, screaming at the top of her lungs.

“Ms. Jones, I’m so sorry. She just barged her way in. I couldn’t stop her,” the young receptionist said in a state of panic as she ran in the room behind an irate Kara. “Should I call security?”

“It’s alright. Go on back to the front, Jeanine. I’ll handle it from here.” Barbara always as calm as a cucumber, turned to her client. “I’m sorry, Davis. Do you mind if we pick up next week? As you can see we’re having a small emergency situation.”

“Sure, next week same time.”

“Absolutely. Don’t forget what we discussed.”

“I won’t, Dr. Jones.” He gave Kara a look of annoyance as he left the room, shutting the heavy oak door behind him.

“Kara, to what do I owe the honor of an unscheduled visit?”

“You lied to my face. I trusted you,” Kara repeated. “How could you do this to me?”

“Please have a seat.” Barbara motioned to the chaise.

“I’ll stand.”

“What did I do exactly?” Barbara inquired. “Because lying isn’t one of them.” She was patient with Kara. She understood her torment was real, the five-year-old girl in her trying to figure things out.

“You never told me that you are my father’s wife,” Kara accused.

“Why would I tell you that?” Barbara sat back in her chair getting comfortable anticipating that this would be a long session.

“Why wouldn’t you tell me? I came to you for years wondering about my father because my mother won’t talk about him, and you knew. You knew all about him.”

“I wanted to tell you, but, Kara, it wasn’t my place to do so. What have I been telling you all this time? ‘Do your research; there are other sources besides your mother to find the answers you seek.’” Barbara smiled softly. “You must have taken my advice because here you are. I know your mother didn’t tell you. She’s not built that way.”

“You know my mother?”

“Victoria and I met briefly in the past, before Charles’s untimely death.”

“I always thought she chose you as my therapist when I was a teenager because of your religious beliefs, but she had other reasons.”

“I’m not sure her reasons, but I was happy to get to know you, see what my daughter may have been like if she were here.”

“My mother said she owed you.”

Barbara cleared her throat. “If that’s how she feels. But she doesn’t owe me anything. It takes two to tango, and she didn’t tango alone; otherwise you wouldn’t be here.”

“How can you be so nonchalant about this? I feel as if my world has shattered.” Kara wanted to cry, but chose to display strength. She would save her tears for when she was alone.

“I’ve had a long time to come to terms with everything. I forgave Charles and your mother long ago. I choose to be happy. Holding on to toxic thoughts and what-ifs isn’t good for anyone.”

“My mother is nothing like you.
